Summer Intern, Maryland Office of the Public Defender, Parental Defense Division
Major: CCJS & PSYC
Class Year: 2020
What was a typical week like in your internship position?
A typical week at my internship would observe courtroom proceedings, conduct legal research, draft legal memos/documents, and interview clients.
What did you enjoy most about the position?
I enjoyed going to observe the trials that my supervisor was involved with. I really enjoyed watching the trials because I learned a lot about trial advocacy skills and strategic ways to represent clients.
How did your coursework help you in your internship?
My coursework helped me with the research and writing aspect of my internship. Even though I had little experience with legal research and writing, the experience I had conducting research in my Criminal Justice and Psychology classes really helped me.
How did you locate your internship position?
I found out about this internship from my fraternity members (Phi Alpha Delta) and I located it on the Maryland Public Defender's website.
Advice for students:
My advice would be to make the most of your internship experience by taking the time to get to know your supervisor and other colleagues. These connections can help you in the future and will make your overall experience more enjoyable. Also, be sure to put as much effort as possible into your internship and don't be afraid to ask questions.
