What was a typical week like in your internship position?

A typical week in my internship position includes drafting correspondence to constituents in order to provide them with solutions regarding federal agencies. I typically answer around 50 phone calls a week regarding issues facing constituents, such as unemployment or vaccinations. I assist constituents with various issues they may be facing, or just offer to listen to their opinion on legislative matters.

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

I enjoy being able to help people with the issues that they may be facing in their lives. This is a very hard time for a lot of people, and being able to connect them to the proper federal agencies so they can get assistance is a rewarding experience.

How did your coursework help you in your internship?

My coursework has prepared me by allowing me to listen to a diverse set of opinions and to know how to reply to them. I may not agree with the opinions of people who call Congressman Hoyer, but I want to work on creating an environment where the concerns of constituents can be heard. Having productive discussions in University has enabled me to retain my composure during tough conversations with constituents.

How did you locate your internship position?

I located my internship position through Careers4Terps!

Advice for students:

I would advise students to not be afraid to try! I struggle with imposter syndrome sometimes and I felt like a Congressional internship was a reach, but I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome of my application.

Anyone who handles constituent calls knows that some people will call who are openly hateful and it can feel very discouraging to deal with calls like that. However, it is a valuable skill to be able to not take things personally and remember to separate your work/personal life. The people calling do not know you, so their anger is not a representation of you. It takes time to learn, but will help your mental state immensely!
