Class Year: 2023

What was a typical week like in your internship position?

Each week I am responsible for connecting clients with Best Within You through Facebook therapy groups, creating social media content for the practice, writing bi-weekly research-based blog posts, and other tasks as they appear. The position is fully remote, and it is expected that you respond to emails in a professional and timely manner. I am responsible for managing Facebook therapy groups on a daily basis.

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

I enjoy creating social media content and writing bi-weekly blog posts. It is a very rewarding experience to see something that I wrote/ created and put a lot of time into being posted on an official website and social media platform. I use my creative skills to create content that is useful to the public and I enjoy the process of writing articles related to various mental health topics. It is also very rewarding to make a match with a client on Facebook and grow my supervisor's clientele.

How did your coursework help you in your internship?

My coursework prepared me for writing about psychological topics. I can integrate research into my blog posts and know that my education at the University of Maryland taught me how to simplify research and apply it to psychological constructs. My general business minor also prepared me to create social media content and use my networking abilities.

How did you locate your internship position?

I found the position listed on BSOS department listserv. The position was posted in a flyer and I immediately applied. I actually did not get the position until a later semester because I was initially looking for a summer position, but I am so glad that I applied when I did.

Advice for students:

In terms of accepting an internship, it is so important to be realistic with yourself about the workload you can handle in addition to managing school. I have a full workload this semester so I was apprehensive about taking on an internship, but getting three credits for my internship rather than getting paid allowed me to take one less class and also have an amazing opportunity. While searching for an internship, make sure you are signed up for the BSOS's listserv and are checking the Feller Center for any opportunities. While you are working at the internship, make sure to ask questions and form connections with your supervisor- networking is so valuable and you can learn a lot from people who have more experience in your field of interest.
