CASA Intern, CASA for Children of DC
Major: Criminology and Criminal Justice
Class Year: 2022
What was a typical week like in your internship position?
Week to week looked a little differently with this internship. Each week, I had a meeting with my supervisor to go over what the week's tasks would be. Sometimes I was changing contact information for her in Salesforce. Other times, I was speaking to volunteers about their cases. For a good chunk of the internship, I was working on two main projects. Two workshops to create and hold for foster youth. Sometimes I was doing research for possible grantors or other organizations. It really depended on the week and what my supervisor needed to be done.
What do you enjoy most about your current position?
For this internship, I got to create and lead two workshops. They were educational workshops that helped foster youth learn information to help them in their future. It was really cool feeling like I helped some of the youth. I would recommend this internship for anyone looking to go into Case Supervisor or Program Development positions. I feel that with my experience I could now get one of these positions.
How has your coursework helped you in your internship?
Being a Criminal Justice major, I already was educated about children in foster care and more specifically impoverished people. I think this made me extra aware and sensitive to the types of people I was working with. The one course that most related to this position would be the Victimology course I took. This was a focus on the types of people that get victimized and foster youth was a group of people. This is because they are abused and or neglected by their parents or guardians, putting them at a disadvantage. Having this background knowledge was very important.
How did you locate your internship position?
I found this position on the CASA for Children of DC website.
Advice for students:
Reach out to your supervisor if you feel you aren't being given enough to do! There will always be extra work for you to do and it will look great that you are taking initiative to get work done.
